Produced by VOA reporter Chris Simkins, the U.S. Voting Rights Act Anniversary series takes an in-depth look at the 1965 measure that outlawed racial discrimination in voting.
Fifty years ago, lawmakers approved, and U.S. President Lyndon Johnson signed, the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The measure outlawed racial discrimination in voting, giving millions of blacks in many parts of the southern United States federal enforcement of the right to vote. Chris Simkins introduces the audience to some civil rights leaders who were on the front lines in the struggle for voting rights.
“These accomplishments are a true testament to the quality of work our journalists and staff put in each and every day. I am truly proud of all of our winners,” said VOA Director Amanda Bennett.
